Networking Lessons From a Cockroach

I received a call recently while working in the coffee shop near my home office. I clicked the receive button and a slightly panicky voice of my wife said, “there is a cockroach in your bathroom.”  “Really?” I said distractedly, still typing on my computer, “well then go in there and kill it.” This advice was not received well – as I knew it would not be.

What To Do When You Meet One of Them

Last month, we had the article What NOT to Do at a Networking Event. Number three on the Top Ten list was “Don’t hand out business cards like candy on halloween.” I received an e-mail from Tiffany in Denver that essentially said: “Thanks for the newsletter. One idea for a follow up article is what to do when someone insists on giving you their card before you know if there is a reason to do so. I usually just give them my card because ‘What do you intend to do with it?’ is a bit aggressive for my taste.”

Mark’s Top 10: Things NOT To Do At A Networking Event

Occasionally, I find myself talking with someone who reminds me of how far I have come along the path of the networker. I always mentally thank them for that. At the same time, I wonder: “has anyone ever told them that this is really not acceptable networking behavior?”  And then I remember that it wasn’t too long ago that I was making the same mistakes.
